The Color Purple by Alice Walker

purpleThis classic book, taking place between the 1930s and 1950s, is the story of a young African American child-wife named Celie. The first half of the book is written by Celie in misspelled and grammatically poor diary entries about her struggles with her sexually abusive father, and an abusive husband at age fourteen. The second half of the book is comprised of letters to Celie from her sister, Nettie, an educated missionary in Africa. A beautiful, poignant and cultural story – the kind of novel you can’t put down, The Color Purple by Alice Walker is highly recommended!
